7
Name also found as Peninnah, Penina, Penelope. In the 1861 Census, John Lancaster, age 65, is a patient in the Queens Hospital, Birmingham, St Thomas District. He is shown married, a gardner. In the same census, Pennina Lancaster is shown married, no husband in household, age 61, born in Little Cheverell. The entry is mis-transcribed as "Commina Lancaster" Living with Pennina is a "neice" named Elizabeth Lancaster, born in Birmingham.

On the official Certified Copy of an Entry of Birth from the General Register Office,"Penina Lancaster" is listed as the mother of Richard Lancaster born June 1838. Her maiden surname is shown as "Rumbol." "Penina" was the informant, but could not sign her name; she just made her X.

The British Civil Registration has a death for "Penina Lancaster," age 78, December Quarter, 1866, Birmingham RD, 6d, page 36. Though the dates do not match up well for her age, I think this is probably our girl. She would have been age 73, but everything else works. She was living in Birmingham for the 1861 Census.

When I was researching John Lancaster, looking for his wife, I found on familysearch that she was identified as Peninah Cook by Val@sensiba.com. I don't know where Val got the idea that John Lancaster was married to this Peninah, except that she was a "Peninah" who was born in the area about the right time to have been his wife. I emailed this Val twice, but no response. Val had temple work underway for "Peninah Cook" as wife of John Lancaster. However, I felt strongly enough about his wife being Peninah Rumble that I changed the name on familysearch (leaving the same identification number). The thing that cinched my decision was getting the official birth entry from the General Register Office for the last child, Richard, which showed that his mother's maiden name was "Rumbol." Cook, Peninah (I146)
